10 Essential Items Every Hiker Should Pack (And Why They Matter)

There's nothing quite like the feeling of standing at a trailhead, backpack on, the smell of pine in the air and a full day of adventure ahead. But that feeling can quickly turn into a nightmare if you're not properly prepared.

Whether you're a first-time hiker or a seasoned trail runner, packing the right items makes the difference between a great day out and a dangerous one. Here's what we always recommend before hitting the trail.

1. The Right Clothing — Layers Are Everything

The number one mistake beginner hikers make is dressing for the weather at the trailhead, not the weather at the summit. Temperatures can drop significantly as you gain elevation, and what started as a warm sunny morning can turn cold and wet within hours.

The key is layering — a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat off your skin, an insulating mid-layer for warmth, and a wind or waterproof outer layer for protection. A quality outdoor hoodie or trail jacket that can pack down small is worth its weight in gold on any hike.

At TrailForge, our apparel is built specifically for this — designed to move with you on the trail while keeping you comfortable in changing conditions.

2. Navigation — Map, Compass, or GPS

Your phone might have great maps but batteries die, signals drop, and screens crack. Always carry a physical map of your trail and know how to use a compass. A basic GPS device or a downloaded offline map is a smart backup. Never rely solely on cell service in remote areas.

3. Water and a Way to Filter It

Dehydration is one of the most common causes of trail emergencies. Carry at least two litres of water for a half-day hike — more in hot weather or at altitude. A lightweight water filter or purification tablets means you can safely drink from streams and natural sources if your supply runs low.

4. High-Energy Snacks

Your body burns significantly more calories on the trail than it does at rest. Pack calorie-dense, lightweight foods that don't require cooking — trail mix, energy bars, jerky, dried fruit, and nut butter packets are all great choices. Don't wait until you're hungry to eat — snack regularly to maintain your energy levels.

5. First Aid Kit

A compact first aid kit should be non-negotiable in any hiking pack. At minimum it should include plasters, blister treatment, antiseptic wipes, a bandage, pain relief tablets, and any personal medication you require. Blisters are the most common trail ailment — a few moleskin patches can save your whole trip.

6. Sun Protection

UV exposure increases with altitude — even on overcast days. Pack SPF 30+ sunscreen, UV-protective sunglasses, and a hat or cap. Sun damage is cumulative and the effects of a bad burn can ruin the days following your hike.

7. Emergency Shelter

A lightweight emergency bivvy or foil blanket takes up almost no space and can be life-saving if you get stuck overnight unexpectedly. Conditions can change fast in the mountains — always be prepared for the worst.

8. A Headlamp with Spare Batteries

Even if you plan to be back before dark, carry a headlamp. Trails take longer than expected. Injuries happen. Weather rolls in. A headlamp means you can navigate safely after sunset instead of stumbling in the dark.

9. Fire Starting Kit

A lighter or waterproof matches and a small fire starter can be essential in an emergency. In cold or wet conditions the ability to start a fire could keep you warm, signal for help, or purify water. Store them in a waterproof bag.

10. Trail-Ready Footwear and Grip Socks

Your feet are your most important piece of equipment on the trail. Invest in footwear appropriate for your terrain — trail runners for well-maintained paths, hiking boots for rocky or uneven ground. Pair them with moisture-wicking, cushioned hiking socks to prevent blisters and keep your feet comfortable for the long haul.
